Why manganese jaw plates fail early
Carbide networks, late quenching and heavy sections — the three things that stop manganese steel doing its one job.
ReadTechnical notes from the shop floor, where to find us this year, and what we have been posting on LinkedIn.
Work hardening only helps if the casting reaches you fully austenitic.
Most premature manganese failures are not caused by the ore. They are caused by carbide networks left in the structure because the soak was short, the quench was late, or the section was too heavy for the cycle used. This piece walks through what to look for on a micrograph, and what to ask your supplier for.

Our first 9.4 MT single-piece mill liner came out of the 15 MT annealing furnace this week. Poured from one heat on the 3,500 KW furnace, quenched in 41 seconds. Good work from the melting and heat treatment teams. #casting #manganesesteel #foundry
