The BHAL Foundation runs our community work in the villages around Savli. Skilling, schools, health and water, staffed by our own people.

The BHAL Foundation

A foundry is part of the village it sits in.

The Foundation is our registered charitable arm, funded by an annual allocation from the company and governed by a board that includes two independent trustees.

It works within 15 km of the Savli works, in Manjusar and the surrounding villages. The four programmes came out of a household survey rather than a board meeting: employable skills, school infrastructure, preventive healthcare and water security.

We publish what we spent and what changed, not what we intended to do.

What the Foundation does.

Programme 01 · Skilling

Kaushal — pre-apprenticeship

A twelve-week residential course for local youth who finished school but not an ITI. Moulding, fitting, welding and basic electrical, taught by our own retired supervisors in a workshop next to the works.

Free tuition, tools, uniform and a monthly stipend
Guaranteed apprenticeship interview at BHAL on completion

Programme 02 · Education

Shala Setu — school infrastructure

Eleven government primary schools in Manjusar and nearby villages, working on the unglamorous things that keep children in class.

Separate functional toilets and running water at every school
Digital classrooms with an offline content library
Annual science fair judged by BHAL engineers
Merit scholarships for girls continuing past Class 10

Programme 03 · Health

Swasth Savli — preventive care

Industrial belts generate health risks well outside the factory gate. This programme concentrates on screening and early detection rather than treatment.

Monthly general camp rotating between six villages
Annual eye and hearing screening, spectacles issued free
Anaemia and diabetes screening for women and older residents
Blood donation drives with employee participation

Programme 04 · Water

Jal Sanchay — recharge and green cover

Savli sits in a water-stressed belt. The Foundation works with village panchayats on recharge structures and tree cover along approach roads and school compounds.

Rooftop rainwater harvesting at all supported schools
18,000 native saplings with three-year maintenance contracts

Inside the boundary wall

Sustainability is a plant decision first.

Processes and machinery are selected with environmental impact in mind. Here is what that means in practice.

820 kWp rooftop solar

Covering a growing share of daytime plant load, with generation posted to the shop-floor display board each morning.

Sand reclamation

Mechanical reclamation returns most moulding sand to the line, cutting both new-sand purchase and landfill volume.

Zero process discharge

Closed-loop furnace and quench cooling, with rainwater recharging the aquifer under the plot. No process water leaves the site.

Recuperative burners

Both heat treatment furnaces recover flue heat into the combustion air, which cuts fuel consumption per batch.

Scrap-based melting

The charge is predominantly recycled steel scrap, so the embodied carbon of a BHAL casting is a fraction of a primary-steel equivalent.

ISO 14001 and 45001

Environmental and occupational health and safety management systems, externally certified and subject to annual surveillance audit.

Governance

How the Foundation is run.

A registered public charitable trust, separately audited, with accounts and programme reports available to any customer, employee or resident who asks.

Board: Three company trustees and two independent trustees from education and public health
Funding: Annual allocation from company profits plus employee payroll giving
Reporting: Audited accounts and an impact report published each September
Selection: Programmes chosen from a household needs survey refreshed every three years
Volunteering: Every employee has two paid volunteering days a year

The test we set ourselves is simple. If we closed the programme tomorrow, would anything we built keep working without us? If not, we have been running a photo opportunity.
